The Connection Between Gluten & Mental Illness

This is an article that I came across that was written by
Sherry Eason, which proves to me how much gluten affects our minds.

Other than accidental gluten ingestion, I have been gluten-
free for about 3 years now. I am 29 years old. From the time
I was 18 until about 4 years ago I have had problems with "mental illness".

I was diagnosed with depression and then a "mood disorder" and finally Bipolar disorder. I was on anti-depressants, sedatives, and sleeping pills just to try to be normal enough
to work, and they weren't working.

About 5 years ago I started having trouble with skin rashes, stomach pains, and my hair falling out. My mother
(diagnosed with Celiac Disease) suggested I try eliminating gluten from my diet to see if that would help.

Within a month of eliminating gluten from my diet my skin rash was gone, my nervousness was gone, and the racing, panicky thoughts gone. Longest "up" time I'd had in a long time.

My health has improved by leaps and bounds since then. I've cut out caffeine from my diet too, and that's worked wonders as well. I now am drug free and symptom free. I am normal again.

No, I have not been diagnosed and probably never will be. After reading about other people's experiences with doctors' ignorance, I don't feel like the diagnosis is worth the aggravation. I know what happens when I ingest gluten and how I feel when I don't.

I just wish that psychiatrists were willing to look for
alternative causes/stressors for manic/depressed symptoms.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Symptoms of Gluten Allergy:

* Bi-Polar (Manic Depression)
* Brown shadows around eyes
* Ringing in the ears
* Depression
* Irritability
* Extreme tiredness
* Lack of motivation
* Anti-social behaviour
* Nervousness
* Inability to concentrate
* Foggy thinking
* Negativity
* Extreme mood swings
* Constipation and Diarrhea
* Facial Twitches
* Panic Attacks
* Obsessive Behaviour
* Obesity
* Food Addiction
* Hair Thinning

I know people who are allergic to gluten,
and whenever they have had gluten, they
become depressed, negative, illogical and
very tired. I can always tell when they have
not had gluten for a while, because their
attitudes and behaviour return to normal.

Gluten is in so much food these days, so
it is very hard to avoid, if you are allergic
to it. Gluten is an addictive substance just
like a drug, so it is very hard to give up.

Gluten is in bread, pasta, pizzas, cereal,
cakes, biscuits and battered food.

Gluten Allergy tests are not always reliable,
they seem to only show results, when you
have eaten constant amounts of gluten,
and you have become chronically ill.

For two months I suffered from constant
diarrhea, without knowing what was causing
it, so I went for a gluten intolerance test,
and nothing showed up, because I was not
having much gluten.

Anyway, I decided to completely give up
gluten, and my body returned back to
normal in just two days. I have had no
problems ever since.

If you are suffering from any of the
above symptoms, try giving up gluten
completly for two to three months, to
see how you feel mentally and physically.

Your body views gluten as a foreign invader,
and as a result your own immune system
attacks all parts of your organs wherever
the gluten is, therefore causing your body
and your nerves in your brain, to suffer
from more and more inflammation.

All this inflammation in turn, creates a whole
host of mental illnesses, arthritis in all the joints,
obesity and diabetes. Gluten basically runs
havoc in your body and your mind, creating
more and more health problems as the years
go by.

So by the time you enter old age, dementia,
alzheimers, arthritis, bad eyesight and heart
attacks will be there to greet you, no thanks
to our western diet which is filled with gluten.
